Yoga Styles
About Our Classes
Lighthouse Yoga School is dedicated to the study and teaching of yoga to aid in the evolution of mankind. We stand out from the pack because we have some of the best yoga asana teachers in the world, and we offer a holistic yoga education to anyone who wants to learn. This education includes pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation, kriyas, anatomy and yoga philosophy.
At Lighthouse, we do not believe any one particular style or lineage of yoga is better than another. We strive to provide a comprehensive system that supports and guides students toward clarity, strength, mobility as well as physical, spiritual and emotional health.
This class blends many styles of yoga such as Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Forrest, and Dharma yoga. The practice aims to bridge gaps in yoga traditions, allowing practitioners to learn from all styles and not just one. Every class includes standing postures, hip openers, backbends, forward bends, twists, and inversions. Most classes include chanting, kriyas, or meditation. All levels are welcome.
JM Vinyasa blends many styles of yoga: Ashtanga, Bikram, Forrest, Iyengar, and Dharma Yoga. This practice aims to bridge the gaps in these yoga traditions, allowing practitioners to learn from all styles — not just one. Each class includes standing postures, hip openers, backbends, forward folds, twists, and inversions. All levels are welcome.
Led Ashtanga classes are taught by Lighthouse’s most senior teachers. In this dynamic class you will practice a traditional series of Ashtanga Yoga, typically the Primary or Secondary series. Each series includes standing postures, forward bends, backbends, twists, and inversions. Chanting and traditional invocations may also be included in class. All levels are welcome.
Teachers focus on creating balance with the body’s strength and flexibility. This class aims to clear blockages in the central channel, speaking to the major chakras of the body.
Explanation of Levels
BEGINNERS WELCOME
This is a one-hour class suitable for students that are new to yoga. Explanation will be given on how to achieve each pose to the best of the student’s ability with an emphasis on proper alignment and breath. New students are encouraged to introduce themselves to the teacher in the minutes before class and let him or her know that they are beginners so that the teacher can make sure they feel supported as they work to establish their yoga practice. Intermediate and advanced students are also welcome, and free to adjust their practice during this class accordingly.
OPEN LEVEL
Open-level classes are suitable for all levels of practitioner, however we suggest that beginner students have some familiarity with the Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara A + B). The pacing and postures may feel challenging, but students are not at all required to have mastered any difficult poses for this class— this is the class where you will learn how to approach them, and build strength and stamina along the way. We invite you to try these classes with an open mind and playful attitude that will support your progress and growth without feeling the pressure for perfection.
INTERMEDIATE
Intermediate classes give students the opportunity to practice more challenging poses and further develop their strength and flexibility. While this class may seem difficult at first, we understand that the only way to grow is to try. Show up with an open mind and ready to work— progress is inevitable! Students are encouraged to feel comfortable with the Open Level class before joining.
