COVID-19 Updates

June 25, 2020
Dear Lighthouse Family,
It’s humbling to look back on the past few months and bear witness to the seismic change that can occur in such a short period of time. Four months ago, the world looked and felt very different than it does now. We hope that no matter where you find yourself today, your yoga + meditation practice has helped you to furnish that place with ease, contentment, and peace. That said, we have an important development to share, which is that Lighthouse Yoga School must permanently close our location on Grand Street.
There were a number of factors that brought us to this decision, and it ultimately came down to an honest confrontation with circumstances that affect us all: the imperative of social distancing amid a pandemic would make it extremely difficult to maintain our Williamsburg studio. One of Lighthouse’s greatest assets, our exceptionally devoted community of students, would not be able to thrive as it used to were we to slash our class sizes and adhere to the near-impossible protocol required to maintain a healthy, hygienic yoga studio. Even beyond our own studio, we suspect that what it means to nurture a shared yoga + meditation community— a sangha— requires an entirely different approach in this new era.
On June 27th, Lighthouse will be closed for good. We’ll be hosting two “soft-closings” of our space with a few of our beloved staff members, on Thursday, 6/25 and Friday, 6/26 between 12 and 4pm. This is the time for you to retrieve stored mats and any other belongings, and to say goodbye to the space. We will also be giving away blocks, straps and leftover cleaning supplies. If you have any questions regarding pick-up procedures or anything else, we welcome you to be in touch with us here.
We know each of you has a special relationship with our studio and that for many of us Lighthouse was a rare sanctuary in a restless city. Jared and Tony poured an immense amount of love into building it, and it’s because of each and every one of you that Lighthouse saw exponential returns on the love gathered there over time. In many ways, the studio was the heart of our community. However, we can all agree that after sharing a practice together we were able to carry the spark we’d generated with us, so we could brighten wherever it was that we found ourselves after class.
We’re not quite sure what the next phase of Lighthouse Yoga School will look like, but we’re already dreaming up new prospects for physical counterparts to our online school. In the meantime, our digital classes will continue to run as usual and evolve with the times. We WILL practice together again one day: on retreat, during a training, somewhere, somehow. But for now: we are full to the brim with gratitude for each of you, and that you found your way to us. Thank you for keeping the light and carrying it forward.
With love,
Jared, Rebecca + Maggie
Dear Lighthouse Family,

We miss you all and hope you are enjoying our online offerings. We have daily classes and weekly workshops all available via zoom. If you are in a different time zone and can’t join us live, you can still sign up for class using the Lighthouse App or MindBody, and select a purchase option that will provide you with a recording of the class to download and keep for personal use.

We are also excited to announce our first online teacher training set to start in June. Click here for details!

Dear Lighthouse Family,

After deep consideration in mind and heart, we have decided that effective tomorrow, Monday, March 16th, Lighthouse Yoga School will close with hopes of reopening April 1st.

Acting in concert with other studios, businesses, and neighbors in New York that have opted to close for at least the next two weeks is the best way to ensure that COVID-19 containment and prevention efforts are as effective and democratic as possible. Each of you knows that physical health is essential to our mental, emotional, and spiritual vitality— not just as individual creatures, but as members of a planetary community.

Stay tuned as we put together class offerings via instagram and youtube. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We love and miss you all and are excited to come back and practice together. Be kind to each other!

We know the atmosphere out there is tenuous and tense. We encourage each of you to keep up your practice, whether you choose to do so at Lighthouse or at home (stay tuned to @lighthouseyogaschool and @wearejared on instagram for some remote classes this week!).
Since we have little control over our external circumstances, one of the most valuable things we can do for ourselves and others is to stay curious and playful; connect with friends and loved ones however you can; and practice gratitude. And, of course, breathe. If you find yourself in a stressful moment, find a quiet place to sit down and breath in through your nose for 5-10 seconds, hold for 5-10 seconds, and exhale 5-10 seconds. This pranayama exercise will help to ease stress in body and mind.
This is also the perfect time to solidify a daily meditation practice. We recommend 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening: Sit comfortably and quietly. Close your eyes and take a bow to honor yourself. Sit up straight and breath into low belly. Surrender and allow whatever sensations and emotions to arise and allow them to express themselves as needed. This is especially important in a time where you may feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Let it move, let it out, and let it go. Find peace within the divine energy of your own heart. When you are finished, take a bow to close, and appreciate the ripple effect that your daily mediation creates.
We wish all of you and your loved ones health, safety and supportive connection as we move forward into spring.
With love,
Jared, Rebecca, Maggie and the Lighthouse Team
